Synopsis

Hong Kong, a vital gateway between China and the world, is poised to lead Asia’s net zero transition by leveraging its deep financial markets, revitalising multilateralism and scaling climate technology.

The city leads Asia’s green, social, sustainability and sustainability-linked bond issuance, representing 45 per cent of the continent’s cross-border sustainable debt in 2024, while its sustainable finance taxonomy bridges key global and Asian frameworks.

Demand is being driven by emerging green, climate and tech opportunities across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Belt and Road economic corridors. As a vital part of this ecosystem, Hong Kong aims to provide the necessary financial infrastructure needed to mobilise global flows of sustainable finance into in these regions.

The challenge is to ensure that Hong Kong’s regulatory and financing pathways keep pace with science-based planetary deadlines, as the window for keeping global warming to 1.5°C rapidly narrows, while addressing key questions such as:

How will the GBA and other economic corridors serve as vital ecosystems for climate tech adoption and urban resiliency? What strategies can unlock private investments for positive impact, including areas such as climate and human health? And how are legal frameworks evolving, from legislation to assurance, to cope with rising ESG disclosure requirements and accountability?

Now in its second year, the Hong Kong edition of Unlocking capital for sustainability will bring together leaders from government, finance and industry to help shape the region’s – and by extension, the world’s – sustainable finance pathway.

Hosted by Eco-Business and UNEP FI since 2018, Asia’s leading sustainable finance forum will take place across six locations – Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore – focusing on actionable strategies and partnerships at a time when they are urgently needed.
